World Heart Day

heartdayOur heart is a magical bag. When I asked people to explain this priceless entity, I came across a variety of definitions. Some call it a symbol of love and truthfulness; others define it as a locus of feelings and intuitions. Philosophy refers it as the king of organs; religion names it the home of God. But science explains it in a more practical manner. Our heart is a muscular organ responsible for pumping oxygenated blood through the blood vessels with repeated rhythmic contractions. From the moment it begins beating until the moment it stops, the human heart works tirelessly. In an average lifetime, the heart beats more than two and a half billion times, without ever pausing to rest.

It was no sooner than 2000 that man decided to allocate a day to inform  people around the globe that heart diseases are the leading cause of deaths claiming millions of lives every year. Since then, World Heart Day is celebrated under the banner of World Heart Federation associated with WHO on the last Sunday of every September. The objective of the day is to familiarize the public with the lethal diseases of heart and how they can be controlled. They develop a series of toolkits or media packs targeting multiple audiences, with content focused on the heart health.

Our zip-zap-zoom lifestyle in the 21st century is a sweet recipe for heart diseases. Mental stress, unhealthy diet, tobacco and physical inactivity are the major factors of heart diseases. Our heart is a muscle and if we want it to be strong we need to exercise it. Tobacco smoke should be avoided as it contains chemicals that block the blood vessels. One should eat a variety of healthy foods and avoid foods high in unhealthy fats and cholesterol. One should avoid sugary soft drinks and add at least five servings of fruits and vegetable in daily diet.

Our heart surely deserves to be loved for all the work it does. It started pumping blood before you were born and will continue pumping throughout your whole life. World Heart Federation is doing an angelic job in this respect and we should try to support them to the best of our abilities.
